Thermal Transfer Ribbons

Thermal transfer ribbons are the consumable that makes thermal transfer printing work - the ribbon sits between the printhead and the label, and heat from the printhead transfers the ink coating onto the label surface to create a sharp, durable print.

At Label Metrics, we stock wax, wax resin, and full resin ribbons in widths from 30mm to 220mm and lengths from 74m to 600m, manufactured and shipped directly from our facility in Hull.

What Are Thermal Transfer Ribbons?

A thermal transfer ribbon is a polyester film coated on one side with an ink formulation - typically wax, wax resin, or full resin. During printing, the thermal printhead applies precise heat to the ribbon, melting the ink and bonding it to the label face. The result is a printed label with significantly better durability, scratch resistance, and longevity than direct thermal printing.

Unlike direct thermal labels, which rely on heat-sensitive paper and fade over time, thermal transfer printed labels are resistant to heat, UV light, moisture, and abrasion. This makes them the preferred choice for any application requiring long-lasting, scannable barcodes or labels that need to survive demanding environments.

Wax vs Wax Resin vs Full Resin - Which Grade Do You Need?

Ribbon grade is the most important specification to get right. The three grades differ in ink composition, durability, and the label materials they are designed to print on.

Wax Ribbons

Wax ribbons are the most cost-effective option and the right choice for most standard paper label printing. The ink formulation is predominantly wax-based, which transfers cleanly onto plain and coated paper labels at lower printhead temperatures. Wax ribbons produce clear, dark prints suitable for standard barcodes, shipping labels, retail pricing, and general warehouse use. They are not suited to synthetic or polypropylene labels. Wax Resin Ribbons

Wax resin ribbons blend wax and resin components to give a better balance of print quality and durability than pure wax, while remaining more economical than full resin. They print well on both paper and coated synthetic labels, offering improved resistance to smudging, moisture, and mild chemical exposure. Wax resin is the most versatile grade and works across the widest range of label materials - a good default choice if you are unsure. Browse our wax resin ribbons.

Full Resin Ribbons

Full resin ribbons use a resin-only ink formulation that produces the most durable print of the three grades. They are designed for synthetic label materials such as polypropylene, polyester, and polyimide, where wax or wax resin ribbons would not adhere correctly. Full resin prints withstand harsh chemicals, extreme temperatures, outdoor UV exposure, and aggressive abrasion. They are the correct choice for chemical labelling, outdoor asset tagging, laboratory samples, and any application where the label must survive in a demanding environment. Ribbon Width and Length

Selecting the correct ribbon width and length for your printer is essential for clean printing and to avoid printhead wear.

Ribbon width should match or slightly exceed the print width of your labels. Using a ribbon that is narrower than your label will leave unprinted areas and can damage the printhead over time. Use the width filter above the product grid to narrow results to your required width. We stock widths from 30mm up to 220mm.

Ribbon length determines how many labels you can print before needing to change the ribbon. Longer ribbons mean fewer changeovers and lower cost per label. We stock lengths from 74m up to 600m. High-volume operations benefit from the 300m, 450m, and 600m options, while lower-volume or desktop printer users typically use 74m or 152m rolls.

Core size also needs to match your printer's ribbon spindle. Most of our ribbons are wound on either 12mm or 25mm diameter cores - check your printer specification before ordering.

Printer Compatibility

Our ribbons are compatible with all major thermal transfer printer brands including Zebra, SATO, Honeywell, Datamax, Citizen, and Toshiba Tec. Compatibility depends on selecting the correct width, length, wound direction (inside or outside wound), and core size for your specific printer model. If you are unsure, check your printer’s user manual or contact us and we can advise on the right ribbon for your machine.

Inside Wound vs Outside Wound

Ribbons come in two wound directions - inside wound (ink faces inward on the roll) and outside wound (ink faces outward). Most desktop and mid-range thermal transfer printers use outside wound ribbons. Industrial printers vary. All ribbons listed in this collection note their wound direction in the product title - always verify this matches your printer's requirement before ordering.

Thermal Transfer Labels

Ribbons are only half of the thermal transfer print system. To get the best results, your ribbon grade needs to be matched to a compatible label material. We stock a full range of thermal transfer labels in permanent, removable, and freezer adhesive variants, as well as coloured thermal transfer labels and thermal transfer block out labels for overprinting applications.

Thermal Transfer Ribbons FAQ

What is the difference between wax, wax resin, and full resin ribbons?

Wax ribbons are the most economical and are designed for printing on standard paper labels - suitable for general retail, warehouse, and shipping applications. Wax resin ribbons offer better durability and work on both paper and coated synthetic labels, making them a versatile mid-range option. Full resin ribbons are the most durable and are specifically designed for synthetic label materials such as polypropylene and polyester, where they produce prints that resist chemicals, heat, UV, and abrasion.

How do I know which ribbon width I need?

Your ribbon width should match or slightly exceed the width of your labels. Most thermal transfer printers also specify a maximum and minimum ribbon width in their documentation. Using a ribbon that is too narrow for your labels can result in unprinted margins and accelerated printhead wear. Check your printer's user manual for the recommended ribbon width, or use the width filter on this page to browse by your required size.

Are your ribbons compatible with Zebra printers?

Yes - many of our ribbons are specifically listed as compatible with Zebra desktop and industrial thermal transfer printers including the GC420t, ZT, ZD, and ZM series. Check the individual product listing for confirmed Zebra compatibility, or filter by width to find options for your specific model.

What does outside wound mean?

Outside wound means the ink coating faces outward on the roll - away from the core. This is the most common wound direction for desktop thermal transfer printers. Inside wound ribbons have the ink coating facing inward toward the core. Using the wrong wound direction for your printer will result in blank labels. Always confirm the required wound direction for your printer before ordering.

Can I use a wax ribbon on synthetic labels?

No - wax ribbons are formulated for paper label materials. On synthetic substrates such as polypropylene or polyester, wax ink does not bond correctly and will smear or flake off. For synthetic labels, use a wax resin or full resin ribbon. If you are unsure of your label material, contact us and we can advise on the correct ribbon grade.
