What Are Coloured Thermal Transfer Labels?
Coloured thermal transfer labels are self-adhesive labels made from a coloured semi-gloss paper face material, designed to be printed using a standard thermal transfer printer and a compatible black ribbon. The thermal transfer process bonds the print directly to the label surface, producing a sharp, durable result that resists smudging, moisture, and general handling far better than direct thermal printing.
The colour comes from the label face itself - not the ribbon. This means you get a consistent, vibrant background colour with black thermal transfer print on top, across every label on the roll.
Why Use Coloured Labels?
The main reason businesses choose coloured labels over white is visual differentiation. When you are running a busy warehouse, production line, or despatch operation, colour allows staff to quickly identify the right label for the right product, priority, or process without having to read every label in detail. Common uses include:
- Warehouse and logistics - colour coding by product category, storage zone, despatch route, or handling instruction
- Production and manufacturing - distinguishing work orders, batch runs, or quality status at a glance
- Retail and distribution - flagging promotions, clearance lines, or priority stock
- Document control - colour-coded file labels, folder tags, and classification systems
Red, orange, and yellow are the three most widely used colours for high-visibility and warning applications, which is why they form the core of our coloured thermal transfer range.
Available Colours and Sizes
All labels in this collection are printed on semi-gloss paper with a permanent adhesive and are compatible with standard thermal transfer printers. We currently stock three colours across multiple sizes:
Red Thermal Transfer Labels
Red labels are widely used for urgent, priority, or stop/reject marking in production and logistics environments. Available in 50 x 25mm, 51 x 76mm, 100 x 100mm, 101.6 x 101.6mm, 100 x 75mm, and 101.6 x 152.4mm.
Orange Thermal Transfer Labels
Orange labels are commonly used for caution, hazard, or intermediate priority marking, and are highly visible in both warehouse and outdoor environments. Available in 50 x 25mm, 51 x 76mm, 100 x 100mm, 101.6 x 101.6mm, 100 x 75mm, and 101.6 x 152.4mm.
Yellow Thermal Transfer Labels
Yellow labels are one of the most commonly used colours for general colour coding, caution marking, and high-visibility applications across retail, logistics, and manufacturing. Available in 100 x 75mm, 101.6 x 101.6mm, and 101.6 x 152.4mm.
Printer and Ribbon Compatibility
Coloured thermal transfer labels require a thermal transfer printer and a black thermal transfer ribbon - the same printer and ribbon setup used for standard white thermal transfer labels. There is no special equipment needed. The label face material is semi-gloss paper, so a standard wax or wax resin ribbon will give the best print result. We stock a full range of compatible thermal transfer ribbons in wax, wax resin, and full resin grades. If you are unsure which ribbon grade to use, wax resin is a safe all-round choice for semi-gloss paper labels.
Coloured Direct Thermal Labels
If you use a direct thermal printer rather than a thermal transfer printer, we also stock coloured direct thermal labels which print without a ribbon. Direct thermal coloured labels are better suited to lower-volume or mobile printing applications where simplicity is a priority, though the print is less durable than thermal transfer over time.
